Airline sector sees hiring boom

In the air and on the ground, there is a new buzz. Airlines, and infrastructure companies involved in airport modernization, are hiring again as the global economy shows signs of revival, with nearly 3,000 people expected to be recruited over the next few months. At this time last year, at least 2,000 employees were retrenched across airlines. Among the airlines that are hiring — even as they add aircraft and destinations — are Kingfisher, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir. International carriers such as Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Oman Air and Qatar Airways are also recruiting from India.

Infrastructure companies such as GMR and GVK, too, are hiring for airport construction and maintenance. IndiGo is planning to hire about 1,000 people in the next few months, and is also planning to hike salaries in the next two-three months. Kingfisher is looking to hire nearly 500 employees over the next one year, while SpiceJet will add another 200 in the coming months. Among those that low-cost carrier SpiceJet is hiring are nearly 100 flight attendants and 40 pilots, as it plans international operations.

A flight attendant employed with a domestic carrier may earn anywhere between Rs 20,000 and Rs 35,000 a month, while a trainee co-pilot could get between Rs 60,000 and Rs 1 lakh a month. However, a pilot employed as a captain with an airline could earn a monthly salary of Rs 4-5 lakh.

International carriers, especially from south-east Asia and the Middle East, are also hiring cabin crew from India. Emirates, for instance, is organising recruitment campaigns in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Lucknow and Calicut. From each city, the airline is expected to hire about 20-25 people for its operations. Many international airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Oman Air are back in India to look for talent, says Samir Walia, Frankfinn’s VP-corporate communications, adding airlines could be taking on 25 to 30 new people every month as they expand. Remuneration with an international airline is far more attractive. A cabin crew member could earn anywhere between Rs 45,000 and Rs 70,000, and in some cases, even up to Rs 1 lakh.
